Arlington Finance Committee Tables Facilities Budget Over Energy Cost Concerns

ARLINGTON -- March 2, 2026, Arlington Finance Committee tables $1.27 million Facilities Department budget over energy under-budgeting concerns. The committee voted unanimously to postpone action on the facilities spending plan at its March 2 meeting after members flagged a pattern of annual mid-year reserve transfers exceeding $100,000 to cover energy shortfalls, with electricity spending already at $126,000 against a full-year budget of $220,644 as of January 21, before a prolonged cold snap. New Facilities Director Jay McNeil, in the role since April 2025, was credited with improved building inspections and communication with school principals, but the committee wants a clearer transfer-need estimate before approving his department's budget. The panel did unanimously approve the Comptroller's fiscal year 2027 budget at $4,662, covering the office of Comptroller Ida Cody, which has tightened internal financial controls and workflow documentation. The committee also flagged several Annual Town Meeting warrant articles, including new revolving funds for the Irving Street school building and the community center and a citizen petition targeting golf-course tax exemptions, for questioning when the town manager appears March 18.
