Arlington Works To Clear Yard Waste Backlog, Warns On Sewer Overflow

Arlington town departments issued a cluster of operational notices this week, from a delayed yard waste pickup to a water safety warning tied to an Alewife Brook sewer overflow, while the town continues expanding its electric school bus fleet under its Net-Zero Action Plan.

TOWN HALL

Arlington public works crews are working to catch up after a missed yard waste collection day earlier this week, a delay confirmed in reporting from Arlington Patch. Residents affected by the disruption should expect makeup pickups as crews adjust routes, according to the outlet.

Separately, a sewer overflow report prompted a water safety warning for parts of Alewife Brook, which runs through Arlington, Somerville, and Cambridge, per Arlington Patch. The town is also continuing to add electric vehicles to its municipal bus fleet, a purchase tied to Arlington's Net-Zero Action Plan calling for an all-electric transition of town vehicles, Arlington Patch reports.

SCHOOLS

Arlington Public Schools is recruiting additional crossing guards ahead of the coming school year, with the district encouraging retirees and other community members to apply, according to Patch. Crossing guards are responsible for helping students travel safely to and from school.

The School Committee is scheduled to hold a special retreat meeting on July 11 at the district office, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., per the district's posted calendar. The district also recently highlighted its "Reusables Roll Out" initiative across APS schools and touted continued gains in its 2025 state accountability results.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

Arlington Public Library continues to promote its slate of upcoming events for adults, teens, and kids through its online calendar, alongside ongoing programs including book clubs, storytimes, technology classes, and the Seed Library. The library's Culturefest and Discover Summer initiatives remain featured on its site as summer programming continues.
