School Committee Presses on Unsigned IEP Data

School Committee · Meeting of September 24, 2026

Arlington School Committee presses district on 109 unsigned special education plans. Student Services leader Ms. Elmer told the board the district is carrying over 109 IEPs that families never signed within the state's 30-day window, automatically logged as rejections with the state's Bureau of Special Education Appeals; Secretary Paul Schlichtman asked for tracking on how quickly those resolve, and Vice Chair Liz Exton said "it feels like turnover to a family when it's not necessarily a number that the district is counting." The committee also heard that buffer-zone assignments fell to 103 students, the lowest in three years, with 84 percent of families getting their first-choice elementary school.

The board approved a $510,271.40 warrant and learned Arlington won $163,380 in new state grants, including an oversubscribed health care career pathway program, plus $20,000 to revive a sister-city exchange with Teosinte, El Salvador.
